Necklaces
When selecting a necklace for yourself or as a gift, the design aspects to consider include the type of chain, length of chain, clasp type and whether it will be worn with a pendant or charm, or alone.
Morgan Jewelers carries all chain types, lengths and clasps and can work with you to customize your chain for yourself or as a gift.
Chain Types
Box Chain – Sometimes referred to as the Venetian chain, box chains come in sizes from light to heavy and offer strength and durability even with a light weight.
Snake Chain – One of the most popular types of chain, snake chains are durable and elegant.
Rolo Chain – With spacing between the links, a rolo chain provides a delicate, airy look.
Byzantine Chain – A tightly knotted chain that gives a robust look, even with a light weight.
Rope Chain – For those seeking a more durable chain, a rope will take the weight of a pendant or charm holder, but will still hang elegantly and softly about the neck.
Wheat Chain – A wheat chain consists of oval and twisted oval links intertwined together. The result is an intricate chain with a great deal of visual texture.
Chain Lengths
Choker – The shortest chain length, usually measuring 14”-16”, this style comes close to the neck.
Princess – Generally 18” long, a princess sits longer than a choker but shorter than the matinee length.
Matinee – Designed to fall at the top of the cleavage, matinee length necklaces are 22”-23” long.
Opera – Opera length can range from 30”-36” long as it is designed to sit at the breastbone of the wearer.
Clasp Type
Spring Ring – Commonly used for necklaces and bracelets, the spring ring clasp uses the pressure of a small spring to keep the clasp closed.
Lobster Claw – Easier to open and close than a spring ring, the lobster claw clasp also uses a spring in the hinge but offers a larger area to grasp for opening and closing.
Barrel Clasps – Available with and without safety guards, the barrel clasp is easy to use and decorative.
Toggle Clasps – Beautifully elegant in design, if not the strongest of closures, toggle clasps use a bar inserted into a circle or design to keep a necklace in place.
